Weekend Recap!

How was everyone's weekend? Did you all have nice weather? This past Saturday the weather was BEAUTIFUL, but then it got cold again on Sunday.  Oh well, it was still a nice weekend, and I am just going to pretend that the weather people are going to be wrong tomorrow and their predictions of that four little word that starts with an S! We have had enough of that this year! Can it be Spring already?

Friday night I met up with some friends/sorority sisters from college at El Paso Cafe in Arlington for some yummy Mexican food! It was fun to catch up with these ladies. Even though I am currently living close to them, with our busy schedules it is sometimes hard to get together!

Saturday Morning, I awoke to a beautiful blue sky, and I was lucky to spend the morning and early afternoon at this guy's house.  Alright, so history nerds and president junkies, whose house is that pictured above? If you guessed Mount Vernon, George Washington's home, you are correct! He really had the right idea when he picked the location to build his house right on the Potomac River!  I am currently in the application process to join the Daughters of The American Revolution or DAR for short.

This Saturday was the wreath laying for Nelly Custis which is the chapter I am currently applying for membership with, and every March they lay a wreath at her grave. Her grave is located next to George Washington's at Mount Vernon. A quick history lesson for all you who might be wondering who and why Nelly gets a prime location next to the First President is that she was the granddaughter of  Martha Washington, and lived with George and Martha Washington from the age of six on.

After the wreath laying, and walking around the grounds & museum, the ladies of the DAR headed to the Mount Vernon Inn for lunch, an awards ceremony and a silent auction! The lunch was yummy, and the DAR presented awards to members for their volunteer service, as well as to two local seniors at one of the local high school's they help to support. The two students were both JROTC students' and very involved in their school and community.  The most fun part of the afternoon was the basket silent auction! My mom (who is currently a member of the DAR) and I put together one of the baskets for the auction.

This was our empty basket, and we had a lot of fun filling it up. We decided on a BBQ theme basket, hoping that soon everyone will be able to be outdoors and fire up that grill! We got a lot of the items at World Market, (oh how I love that store!), and if anyone out there is is need of some new grilling items, or inspiration for your next BBQ, I would recommend heading over there!

This was our finished basket! It really did have some great items in it, and part of me wanted to bid on our own basket, but I resisted the urge! Out basket brought in the third highest amount of money out of 15 baskets! I have to say my mom and I make a good team when it comes to making baskets. 100% of the money raised is going to restore the crib in the Nelly Custis room at Mount Vernon. All in all, a great day! I find out in May whether or not I am voted in to the Daughters of the American Revolution so keep your fingers crossed!

Other than that, my weekend was pretty uneventful. Did you get out and enjoy the nice weather, or do anything fun?

Hugs,

Caroline
